Decision Coaching
Creative listening, deep-experience-based understanding, and an intense focus on resolution achievability.
Welcome! I am Gerry Allan, a sole practitioner of decision coaching for business owners and executives, professionals, and organizational leaders. After many years of management consulting and executive coaching for very many large and small organizations, I have recently refocused my practice to a fully online and coaching specialization.
I work with individuals mostly, helping them define and understand their particular decision situation, providing deep expertise to guide them in developing effective responses to their situation, and supporting them as they put their decisions into action.
My approach is very different from most coaches. I am strongly people-focused and practical rather than being analytical. Although I have a Harvard doctorate in decision analysis, I have found that analysis is largely digressive. Rather, decisions based on your heart-and-mind – your intuition – is where very powerful and effective are to be found.

Getting Started
The most effective way to get under way in my experience is an introductory conversation. This can be either a video call or a regular phone conversation. Your choice. I do not charge for this introductory conversation.
We are likely to interact through some combination of written and verbal exchanges. The particular combination that works best is what I will try to discover earl on. It will be somewhat different for you than for any other client. You are different. This is so important to learn how, and to build specifically upon. What works best for you may not work best for anyone else.
I am not a therapist. Sometimes folks have decision-making problems that really require a trained therapist’s support. I cannot be of help in such cases. I will try to see in our initial conversation whether what I do is what you really need.
People Matter Most
Decision situations are mostly created by people, not things, not systems, and not theories. Effective resolution of decision situations is done by real people operating in a real world. I work with people to help them achieve and implement truly effective solutions.
People nearly always matter most. People create decision situations. People solve decision situations. Analysis is peripheral – at best. Systems are often part of the situation that must be addressed. Theories are – well, generally useless, except as a way to start and redirect thinking.
I work with people. I help them gather essential facts and ideas and use these to define a working decision situation. I help them understand the situation with the advantage of being an outsider. I help them develop possible approaches and actions. I try to keep a strong focus on actionability in their real world.
Analytics — Not
I have learned over the years that analysis-focused decision-making is rarely as effective as needed. People-focused decision-making works best nearly always. Analysis may be helpful in limited ways but not primarily.
In case you are interested in academic credentials, I have a B.A.Sc. in engineering physics from the University of BC (Vancouver), an M.Sc. in microwave engineering from the University of AB (Edmonton), an MBA in applied economics from UC Berkeley, and a doctorate from Harvard in mathematical decision analysis (Cambridge). These turned out to be an excellent starting point, but less and less useful in my consulting and coaching work as time passed.
